Overview

This class will discuss the mechanical function of the upper extremity in normal conditions and in dysfunction commonly seen in typical adaptive patterns. Anatomy, biomechanics, embryology and neurology of the associated structures will be discussed. During extensive hands on lab time, assessment and application of various treatment techniques – including Muscle Energy Technique, Functional Technique, Neural glide, and Myofascial Release – will be demonstrated and practiced.

Learning Objectives (upon completion)

  1. Concept of Somatic Dysfunction as applied to all parts of the Shoulder Girdle and Upper Extremity.
  2. Anatomy and biomechanics of related segments of the Shoulder Girdle and Upper Extremity.
  3. Neurology and embryology of related segments of the Shoulder Girdle and Upper Extremity.
  4. Evaluating the Shoulder Girdle and Upper Extremity using various assessment tools.
  5. Treatment principles in treating Shoulder Girdle and Upper Extremity Somatic Dysfunctions.
