Manual Therapy Treatment of the Gastrointestinal System – Part 2 (Absorption and Elimination)

Overview

Gastrointestinal disorders are a primary non-musculoskeletal reason why people have pain, systemic inflammation, and difficulty performing their desired activities. This class will examine how proper motion of the musculoskeletal system integrates with the gastrointestinal viscera and how disorders of either can be problematic. In Part 1 we focused on the upper GI system from the mouth to the duodenum and the process of digestion. In Part 2 we will discuss the small intestines through the end of the GI tract and how disorders with absorption and elimination can affect these systems. Thorough evaluation and treatment of relevant musculoskeletal structures, gastrointestinal viscera, and the lymphatic and autonomic nervous systems will be demonstrated and practiced. Taking Part 1 is not a requirement for taking Part 2.

Learning Objectives (upon completion)

1. The student will understand the anatomy of the absorption and elimination portions of the gastrointestinal system.
2. The student will understand the physiology of the absorption and elimination portions of the gastrointestinal system.
3. The student will understand how to evaluate the absorption and elimination portions of the gastrointestinal system for the presence of somatic dysfunctions.
4. The student will understand how to treat somatic dysfunctions in the absorption and elimination portion of the gastrointestinal system.
